In the paper processing industry, "Short-Length Paper Cutting" typically refers to the transverse cutting of finished sheets ranging from 400mm to 650mm in length. With the growing demand for packaging printing, premium labels, and small-format cartons, achieving high-speed cutting of short sheets while maintaining high precision has become a core challenge that tests the underlying mechanical design of the equipment. Traditional single-knife impact cutting often struggles with such high-frequency, high-grammage tasks.
Based on the technology of the CHM-SGT Double Knife Reinforced Series from CHEUNG KONG MACHINERY, this article deeply analyzes the core pain points of short-length paper cutting and explores industrial-grade high-speed, high-precision solutions.

1. Sharply Increased Cutting Frequency Demands Extreme "Synchronization"
At lengths of 400mm to 650mm, achieving the same linear speed as long sheets requires a significant increase in the rotational frequency of the cross-cutting knife shafts, completing hundreds of precise meshing cycles per minute. At this point, any tiny gear backlash or transmission lag will be amplified by the high frequency, leading to edge tearing, increased paper dust, or dimensional drift.
The CHM-SGT series adopts a double rotary synchronous shearing process. The cross-cutting knife groove features a specific spiral angle, and the upper and lower knife shafts cooperate with zero-backlash gear transmission, cutting progressively like scissors. This ensures absolute synchronization of rotation speed and phase of the upper and lower knife shafts under high-frequency operation.
2. Higher Proportion of Acceleration/Deceleration Tests Servo and Frame Rigidity
In short-sheet mode, the cycle time for each cut is extremely short, and the equipment frequently operates in acceleration and deceleration states. This not only requires the control system to have an extremely high dynamic response bandwidth but also demands the frame to withstand frequent torque impacts. Furthermore, for high-grammage cardboard and kraft paper of 200g to 1000g/m², a highly rigid frame is the foundation for ensuring clean cuts.
The CHM-SGT series is equipped with dual servo motors and electronic gear synchronization control. The main side walls adopt a closed frame structure, and the key assembly surfaces of the base are processed with thickened plates milled in one piece, greatly enhancing the torsional rigidity and dynamic stability of the entire machine, ensuring precision and durability when cutting short-length thick paper.
3. Increased Difficulty in Material Handling at the Delivery End
Short and heavy high-grammage sheets have complex aerodynamic behaviors and high impact kinetic energy when falling at high speed, making them highly prone to drifting, misalignment, or uneven stacking. If the delivery mechanism cannot quickly dissipate energy and align the sheets, high-speed cutting will be meaningless.
The delivery section of the CHM-SGT series adopts a cylindrical support structure. The side paper stoppers are equipped with ball screw tapping devices to precisely adjust the delivery width; the single-action tapping structure of "one stationary, one moving" ensures a constant reference. Additionally, chain and sprocket guards are added to prevent lubricating oil from splashing and contaminating the paper, ensuring stacking neatness under high-frequency cutting.
4. Crisis in Thermal Management and Tool Life Due to High-Frequency Friction
High-frequency cutting of short-length thick cardboard means the friction resistance and frequency between the blade and the paper increase exponentially. If heat cannot be dissipated, the viscosity of the lubricating oil in the knife head gearbox will drop sharply, leading to gear wear and even seizure ("overheating meltdown"), which is a fatal pain point for older equipment without external cooling at high speeds.
The knife head assembly of the CHM-SGT series introduces an independent external circulating oil cooling system. The lubricating oil flows out from the gearbox, enters an external cooling unit for forced cooling, and is then pumped back to the knife head, controlling the oil temperature within the optimal working range. The stable oil film greatly enhances the durability of gears and bearings under high-frequency, high-pressure conditions. Meanwhile, for thick paper conditions, it is recommended to use alloy steel rotary knives or specific grades of tungsten steel that balance hardness and toughness, and to control the knife clearance at 0.01-0.03mm to extend tool life.
5. Static and Dust Problems Are Significantly Amplified
When cutting high-grammage kraft paper, white cardboard, and laminated paper, static electricity not only easily causes paper adsorption and deviation, but high-frequency cutting also generates a large amount of paper dust. Without a dust extraction device, paper dust adhering to the cut edge will affect subsequent printing quality.
The CHM-SGT series features a standard dust extraction system (differentiating it from the optional configuration on single-knife machines), with paper dust suction devices installed after slitting and cross-cutting. Combined with enhanced static elimination configurations, it effectively removes paper debris and static electricity, ensuring the cleanliness of the cut surface of premium cardboard.
To address high-speed short-length paper Cutting, the technical route of the CHM-SGT series is very clear: replace "single-knife impact chopping" with "double-knife pure shearing".
-
Working Principle: The upper and lower knife rollers are controlled by independent servo motors, and electronic gear technology ensures reverse, same-speed, and same-phase rotation. When the web enters the meshing area, the upper and lower blades cut into the material simultaneously, forming a "guillotine shear" effect.
-
Performance Advantages: Bilateral force application distributes stress evenly, eliminating material deformation caused by single-sided impact. For white cardboard, kraft paper, etc., of 200-1000g/m², the cut edge is smooth and burr-free, and the finished product can be directly sent for printing.
-
Speed and Specification Reference: The CHM-SGT series is designed for thick materials, large batches, and high-precision production. Applicable grammage: 200-1000g/m²; for high-grammage paper above 250g, single-roll unwinding is mandatory to avoid frame overload and diagonal cutting.
High-speed short-length paper cutting tests not the limit of a single component, but the comprehensive synergy of four major systems: knife head synchronization, rigid frame, thermal management, and delivery & dust extraction. With the CHM-SGT Double Knife Series, CHEUNG KONG MACHINERY takes "double rotary synchronous shearing" as the core, supplemented by an independent oil cooling system and heavy-duty delivery devices, providing global high-grammage paper processors with a highly stable, low-loss short-length high-speed cutting solution.
